From apartment doors to wrap around front porches, how do we welcome the season and our guests with style?
Blend the style of your home and personality with your decor. The entrance of your home is the perfect place to set the mood for yourself and visitors. Here are a few questions to ask yourself as you get started.
- What are the features of your entrance?
- What style of landscaping or aesthetic are you working with?
- How do you want guests to feel when they arrive?
Add something green. From a traditional porch planter and hanging baskets to something more minimal like houseplants or simple potted hosta, find what works for you and your space. Consider maintenance, amount of light and the time you have available.
Create a feature. Add a touch of the season or holiday you are celebrating. Cheer on your favorite team or brag about your hobby. From a little sign to a flag or antique piece. Let some of YOU show through.
Invite your guests From a welcome mat to a 6’ tall sign, there’s something about a good Midwest welcome. Of course, a little goes a long way, so try to avoid multiple “Welcome” messages in exchange for another unique feature.
Cozy place to sit. Even the smallest outdoor space has room for a small stool or garden chair. A little place to perch while you sip your morning coffee can change up the pace of your day. Apartment dwellers might consider this for a back balcony or even near a sunny window.
A place for all the things. From shoes, keys, to garden tools, consider who and what is going in and out of your door and create a unique place for “all of the things.” One of my favorite storage tricks is a few picnic baskets stacked together for sunscreen and bug spray.
Remember the most important person you will welcome home: You!!! If you prefer bright and cheery colors go for it. If you prefer more refined vibes then keep it clean and simple, yet well cared for. After all, this is home!
