Confessions: Homeschool & Bacon

in Uncategorized on 06/02/20

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. This old saying has been a truth we’ve circled back to in our home again and again through the years. In the early years of our dating and marriage, Cowboy was working nights, so our pancakes were for supper. That wasn’t a problem for me — breakfast for dinner is one of my love languages! (Not to mention, there were times when we were crunching down on debt and building savings that we ate pancakes to see us through to pay day.)

Over the last year or two we’ve started accepting the reality that our schedule and work-life balance look a little different. Not only does Cowboy work from home, but we work many weekends and evenings with our business; and I teach 32 hours each week. Our youngest is often gone on the weekends for time with his dad and our oldest often has schedule changes that require us to be available to him during the usual work days. All of this — plus the usual appointments, practices, church activities and all of the other good things that leave little white space on a family calendar. After some time of frustration and fighting to try to find “normalcy,” I found myself in a season of absolutely resenting the chaos. Maybe it’s growth or maybe it’s pure exhaustion, but not only am I finding a way to accept our reality, but embrace it.

As we craved more family time and a more manageable rhythm to life, we made a bold move this school year and home schooled our youngest half days. Because this is all new and was a very brave thing for him to try while going into junior high, I’ve been pretty quiet about it. We share a lot about our family and as our children have grown older, we find it really important that they are a partner in what and how we share about our lives. They come first.

We are a little over half way through the year and what next year holds is still to be determined. But, one thing I know for sure — we’ve found a little rhythm in breakfast and learning. While the bacon is sizzling and the pancakes are turning golden brown, our family is doing what I imagine the average family does on a Tuesday evening or Saturday morning. We are doing life together. Sometimes this is sweet and magical and other times there’s a little conflict and tension. Honestly, both are precious because we are together — learning, growing and sharing the most important meal of the day. Plus, bacon makes everything better.

PS…our 2020 collection doesn’t go live on the website until February 15th, but I’ve listed these cute kitchen pieces for you to snag early…shhh!
